2020 Championship of the Alde

After a 24 hour postponement due to to storm force winds, the annual Championship of the Alde race took place on Sunday 25th October. Twenty seven varied boats came to the start line for what promised to be a tough trip south around Havergate Island with winds still blowing force 4 to 5. The centreboard fleet started first at 11:30 with a brave port tack approach from Terry Hacker in his 420. After Ian had re-rigged his K6 spinnaker just before the start gun, the keelboat fleet followed next with a very crowded line mostly bunched up at Ferry point. The beat south to Dove point was relentless, but all crews were then rewarded with an exciting run home, and for the Loch Longs the sight of Tantrum’s dramatic broach under spinnaker coming back through Orford. All but four boats completed the course, with some very close finishes on the line. Ian Robson was first home, Nick Barker in his Flying Fifteen won the keelboat fleet on handicap, whilst Terry Hacker in his supersonic 420 won overall on Handicap.
