About Junior sailing

Junior sailing is a central part of the Club and traces its roots back to the days when the Club’s one design clinker built dinghy, the Lapwing, had its own junior red sailed rig. While all types of boat are welcome at the club, structured Junior coaching and training is based around four junior classes;  Optimists, RS Teras, RS Fevas and Lasers (4.7 or radial rigs). We are developing an RS200 fleet as a two handed youth boat. The contact points for these classes are:

Optimists Rory and Aisling Bowman rorybowman@bowmaningredients.co.uk,
Teras Linda Phelan e-mail lindajphelan@googlemail.com
Fevas Sarah Davies training@aldeburghyc.org.uk
Lasers and RS200 Sarah Davies e-mail: training@aldeburghyc.org.uk
Junior Lapwings Lucy Vinten e-mail: lucy.vinten@googlemail.com

Each of these classes will have a slightly different programme but in general fit into the elements below. There are a number of elements to the Junior Sailing programme:

Sunday Morning Training On most Sundays from early May through to the October half term the club runs coaching sessions for each of its training classes. These sessions usually run from 10.00 – 12.00 and are intended for sailors who are capable of handling their boat in a force 3. The sessions are run by volunteers and parental assistance is appreciated.

Summer Holiday Sailing From mid-July through to the end of August the Club employs two Junior Instructors who are on hand six mornings a week to encourage junior sailing. The Summer Points series is raced for on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, together with the Sunday training there are opportunities for a full summer of sailing for all juniors.

RYA Junior Training Courses From early July to the end of August the Club runs a series of week long (morning or afternoon) courses that follow the RYA course structure. More than 200 children participate in these courses over the summer and they give an intense and structured boost to sailing progression. For more details see the Training tab at the side of the page.

Junior and Youth Regatta Since 1989 the Club has run a separate Junior and Youth regatta usually in the week before the main regatta.  This flagship event attracts in excess of 150 boats with approximately 250 children participating. Skill levels range from  novice racers through to members of the national squads, so all capabilities are welcomed. The Club’s policy is that junior sailing should be encouraged at all levels and that the type of boat is not important per se. Juniors should be encouraged simply to get on the water with anything that sails and have fun. Nevertheless it is worth noting that the RYA support the following junior classes and this might provide some guidance for parents considering a purchase.
