Laser Open Meeting Report

The Laser Open was sailed on Sunday with 12 Lasers out for a series of three races held back to back.  The current situation meant that the race had to be sailed on the river rather then the sea as planned.  This meant that the race was sailed at dead low water and and a westerly wind made it difficult for the OOD Tim Hannon. However, some imaganitive thinking meant that a windward/leward course was set with the start at Westrow and using Chapmans and Elbow as turning marks.  Two laps for each race gave about 35 minutes races and close results for all rigs out on the water.

Terry Hacker led the first race form the start but a momentary lapse of concentration just minutes from the end meant he touched a moored boat and had to retire.  However, it was not to hold him back and two bullets in the remaining races gave him a strong first place overall.

Second place was hottly contested by George Hill and David Copp.  Both ended on four points but George managed a 2nd place in the last race by just 0.8 seconds ahead of James Fairley to get second overall on discard.

Tim and Jo on the committee boats looked after us well and despite a few capsizes in the shifting wond conditions the resce boats were not called into action.

I was also most impressed by the courtesy of the fleet.  When landing not a single person put their boat away until they had made sure that all boars were safely out of the water and on their trolleys – excellent sportmanship!”

1st  Terry Hacker
