AYC Schools Sailing Trust

Over the years, AYC has taken local schools sailing. A few years ago, as part of AYC’s partnership with Suffolk Secrets this programme was reignited. Last year Aldeburgh Primary, Alde Valley Academy and Leiston Primary took part and benefitted from this experience.

The enthusiastic response AYC has seen from the teachers to take part, prompted us to go out to our Members earlier this year with a plea to support the AYC Schools Programme. So great was the response that we made the next step to set up the programme as a charity – The Aldeburgh Yacht Club Schools Sailing Trust application is now underway. It made perfect sense to make this next step as not only does a charity benefit from Gift Aid but the funding will help establish this programme in our community.

James Ratcliffe, Headmaster at Aldeburgh Primary comments “The children thoroughly enjoy their sailing lessons with Aldeburgh Yacht Club and we feel it is an important part of our school Enrichment Programme. Children learn a completely new set of skills which will not be found in the National Curriculum. Last year we had enough time on the water to enable several children to achieve their RYA Stage One Certificate which is fantastic! For others, sailing sessions may be about overcoming certain anxieties about being on the water which in turn opens up a whole new area of opportunity for that child. Not only do they enjoy being on the water but they engage with the local area in a way which can only encourage environmental responsibility and stewardship.

Our thanks go to Aldeburgh Yacht Club and Suffolk Secrets who came together to make this happen two years ago. This will be our 3rd cohort of Year 6 children going through the programme and we fully intend to offer sailing to our oldest children each year going forward.”

Suffolk Secrets has confirmed their continued commitment to the project, and other sponsors have committed their support: RF Upson & Son, James White Drinks, Stressless (Ekornes Ltd) and Ward & McKenzie Yacht Consultants.

It is not too late to volunteer your time, donate funds or sponsor the programme. So do contact Patrick Hill (ayccommodore1820@gmail.com) or Alison Moor (07973 207138) if you are interested to come onboard. Equally, please let us know if you would like to come down in June when the schools are sailing and see what it is all about.

“In 2019, we have 180 children signed up to take part in June. A huge thank you to all who have supported to make this happen. The schools are delighted and extremely enthusiastic to make this programme a firm part of the school’s calendar.” Patrick Hill, AYC Commodore.
