Swallows at Aldeburgh
The Swallow was selected as the then 2 crew yacht for the 1948 Olympics. The designer was Tom Thornycroft. The class has a large fleet at the Itchenor Sailing Club which organises the National Championships. The class shares a start during Cowes week. The Aldeburgh fleet was started in the 1950’s and today there are 8 Swallows in the Aldeburgh fleet. We are now getting a regular turn out of two/three boats outside August and usually have 6 Starters for the classes own start in the morning of the Regatta. The class is easy to sail two up with a helm and crew as there are no winches or runners to add to the complications of sailing.

The optional third crew member makes keeping the hull flat in windier conditions easy.

New boats are being built under a license agreement, with two recently launched for the Itchenor Fleet.

The class website has details of boats for sale and tuning recommendations for the rig.
