AYC is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) recognised training centre. Each year we run our ever popular summer holiday programme of RYA Dinghy Sailing courses, as well as lots of other RYA and Club activities throughout the season.

Whether you are new to sailing or if you already enjoy sailing and want to do more, booking onto one of our RYA sailing courses is a good next step.  These sailing courses can take you from complete beginner to sailing or racing expert, from age 8 to 88, so there is something for everyone.

Individual sailing tuition is available for all throughout the season in dinghies and our keelboat, a 23 ft Hunter Sonata ‘mini cruiser’, and this is a great way to explore the river and enjoy picnic sails, learn to sail and develop existing skills.

For members there is an excellent junior programme throughout the summer holidays for those who already have some sailing experience, and Adults with prior sailing experience can also join our Wednesday afternoon ‘Ladies (and occasional Lads) who Launch’ and Sunday morning ‘Club Sailing’ where  junior and family participation is welcomed.  There is an instructor on hand for advice and assistance afloat for these and these are held at times when there is no club racing, so the river is quieter.

Out of the busy summer months we run powerboating and shorebased courses as well as instructing and coaching courses.

We have an exciting range of training for 2020, introducing Keelboat courses and more Day Sailing courses, as well as helping our Junior and Youth Sailors with coaching clinics run by world class sailors. There are plenty of opportunities for adult sailors too, it’s not all about the juniors!  The RYA Courses take place in July and August and each course is five half days, from Mondays to Fridays. Courses and are taught in small groups according to age and experience. This year they start on Monday 13 July, for 4 weeks prior to our Junior and Main Regatta weeks (9 to 21 August) and then for a fifth week 24 – 28 August.

We run the following courses:

  • Stage 1,2, 3 and 4 – RYA National Youth Scheme
  • Level 1 and 2, 3 RYA Adult National Sailing Scheme
  • RYA Advanced modules: Start Racing, Seamanship, Spinnakers and Day Sailing
  • RYA Race coaching, starting off with Start Racing and progressing to the ‘own boat’ courses for the more advanced, using experienced and successful qualified Coaches.
  • Junior Optimist dinghy sailors with their own boats can follow the International Optimist Class Association (IOCA) scheme, which is more focused on racing.
  • New for 2020 will be Keelboat courses for Youth and Adult sailors wanting to learn the ropes or to broaden their sailing horizons
  • We also run ‘Improve Your Skills ’ courses – a fun week of full-on sailing, aimed at those who do not sail at other times of the year and enabling them to practise and consolidate the skills learnt before advancing to the next stage.

For further details about the courses, the full course programme and the 2020 Training Guide plus booking forms, please follow the following links:

Booking forms must be competed and returned along with payment direct to Aldeburgh Yacht Club in advance of any course or instruction – this enables us to ensure that important safeguarding and safety criteria are met.

Early booking is advised, especially for start sailing courses, as many of the courses fill up early in the year.

RYA Level 1 and 2 If you prefer to get afloat aboard something possibly a little dryer, we run powerboat courses in the Spring and Autumn.   These 2-day courses provide the skills and knowledge required to drive a powerboat under 10m safely, enabling you to apply for an International Certificate of Competence, often required if chartering a boat abroad.

RYA Safety Boat.  For more experienced powerboat helms wanting to help with Club events we also run safety boat training where you will hone your manoeuvring skills and learn how to tow, right, rescue and recover a variety of boats.

AYC Safety Boat training 1 day skills courses for helms with good powerboat skills and also for Safetyboat Crew if you would like to learn how to assist in AYC safety boats (‘patrol boats’) for regattas, club racing, schools and charity events.

This runs in conjunction with the RYA OnBoard scheme to get young people from schools in our community on the water.  In 2019 the AYC Schools Sailing Trust was set up and supported with funds from Member donations and our sponsors -Suffolk Secrets, James White Drinks, RF Upson & Son, Stressless (Ekornes Ltd) and Ward & McKenzie Yacht Consultants.  Several local schools enjoyed this fantastic opportunity and over 160 children experienced sailing – learning new skills and exploring the River Alde.

If you are keen to put your skills to good use and help other club members or become involved with our schools and charity sailing events, or club events such as Junior regatta and club racing, we also run courses over the Autumn and Spring to equip you with skills required.    There are RYA First Aid courses, RYA VHF Radio courses, racing Rules clinics, Instructor and Race Coach qualification courses as well as the online RYA Safe and Fun safeguarding course.

These are all arranged subject to demand, so keep up to date with the latest news by making sure you singed up for the weekly club news emails to

Powerboat courses commence at the end of March with First Aid courses planned for Feb half term and /or the week prior to Easter.

The RYA Online Safeguarding course can be booked and completed at any time.
There will be training sailing/instructing and safety boat courses for volunteers and instructors in April and May.

AYC has an excellent fleet of up to date training boats which are available for charter at weekends and when not being used on training courses.  The boats reflect some of the main fleets sailed at the club, so if you are thinking about buying our own boat, these are ideal to charter to try out.   Most of these are available with racing sails.
