BIGKID Foundation - Sailing at AYC
BIGKID have had another successful year sailing at Aldeburgh Yacht Club, and what a wonderful 7 years it’s been running this trip. Providing 15 young people aged between 12-19 years old, from deprived areas of London, the opportunity to learn how to sail. This year's group was full of non-swimmers but by the third day they had taken ahold of their fears and bravely sailed on the river even though some of them capsized! They maneuvered the sailing boats whilst avoiding being sprayed with sea water, their level 1 RYA sailing certificates were definitely well deserved. We’re really proud of all of the participants.

Giving them the opportunity to sail and spend time away from their London “comfort” zones has helped them to reflect on life and give them a more positive outlook on their future”. BIGKID Foundation is a multi-award-winning youth and community charity established in 2008; their mission is to end social exclusion and youth violence. They work with over 1,500 young people annually and are experts in youth engagement. They equip young people to take control of their lives, find, develop and act on their own potential through community engagement, mentoring and leadership programmes, including the chance to access places and experiences they wouldn't otherwise have.
The young people who attended this trip not only learnt how to sail, they also had the opportunity to ride and drive RIBs, horse ride and row boats on Thorpeness Meare. It was truly a transformative week for all of the participants.
All this would not have been possible if not for Aldeburgh Yacht Club, its members, staff and amazing volunteers, who not only taught these young people how to sail, but assisted with cooking meals, baking tasty treats and took groups out on their cruisers. A huge thank you to you all!

‘I had so much fun throughout the week, trying out different activities I've never tried before. I made new friends and enjoyed being a Skipper. The sailing trip was an unforgettable adventure!’
